Just back from a gig seeing my lovely friend George 'in conversation' with Josh Thomas - 'Let's Learn Some Shit - The Media'. Line up was John Safran, George McEncroe, Dave O'Neil and George Negus.
Guess which George is my friend?*
It was nice to get out of the house and see some excellent people I don't get to see often enough. To forget I have small people at home to look after. To have one and a half beers and feel a little loco.
And thank you Blogtoberfest, it was nice, but it's time to see other people.
* You may not believe me, but I used to be a reporter on 60 Minutes. But I was a man then - it was the 80s. See? Beer.**
** To clarify - I used to be a man, not my friend George.
There were two vintage - well, old - fire extinguishers at the Holy Trinity oppy in Kew yesterday for $35 each. Not quite as gorgeous as the one pictured, but still very charming: red with small brass plaques. I was tempted but we are about to seriously declutter. But please, someone buy them - they're lovely.
I did buy these two cute frames:
$3 each
And this huge roll of Christmas wrapping sheets - also $3.
Don't be fooled by this purchase. This is probably the last Christmas-related purchase I'll make until, oh, around the 21st of December. We'll see.

I've never thought to pick geraniums (even though geranium is my favourite essential oil) for displayingment, but I stole some from an overhanging creeper on our walk this morning and don't they look lovely? Such a pretty colour.
Other exciting things happening around here: Chester bear had a baff!
He looks a little like a reindeer
And of course, a bit of ope shopeing. Yesterday at Kew Vinnies - which, I must say, is rocking at the moment - I found this:
Willow cake tin $5
It matches my oven mitttt and apron perfettamente. Orange and flowery? I want to go to there.
I found this at Kew Vinnies too, a couple of years ago:
see above
It was $4. Inflation - what can you do?
And I also found this ring yesterday, seen here worn by my beautiful baby. She has a future I feel. 'Sparkle, Saskia! Sparkle!'
She does need a pedi
It was 50 sensis. A lot of things I've found recently have been 50 sensis. I didn't think you could buy anything for 50 sensis anymore. But. You. Can. 50 SENSIS!
I've been a wee bit grumpy the last few days - over that now. I think. Don't push me.
However a bit of ope shopeing today cheered me up. Even though the old dears in my favourite ope shope thought my beautiful baby daughter was a boy.
As I walked into said favourite ope shope I spotted a lovely lady with a small person carrying a Fisher Price Little People Barn. I told her she'd scored! And then I found these:
Little persons
All in a bag for ten buckerooneys!
This too:
And then this at Vinnies in Mont Albert:
50 sensis!!
And these stamps too:
Peace be with you
This is my favourite:
Tottering between nouveau and deco, no?
We might use them for Christmas cards.
The Mont Albert vinnies is a bit crazy with their pricing though. There was one of these, which I'd paid $5 a couple of weeks ago and they were asking thirty dollars for it! I don't know...
Remarkable how a few excellent finds can cheer you up. The gorgeous sunshiny day and the spring blossoms blossoming helped too.

Amazingly, I was wondering the other day whether there existed a children's 'introduction to architecture' book and then, lo and behold, I saw this on Babyology. ('Amazing' because of the coinkidink, not because I have actual thoughts etc.)
'The Three Little Pigs: An Architectural Tale' (Abrams) by Steven Guarnaccia is a retelling of the classic story, but the piggies appear remarkably similar to Frank Gehry, Philip Johnson and Frank Lloyd Wright, and the book is scattered with design icons - perfect! I've just ordered mine!
I always take a beat whenever I mention Frank Lloyd Wright (my day-to-day conversation is peppered with such references) as I'm constantly compelled to say either Walter Burley Griffin or Andrew Lloyd Webber instead. It's the three name W thing going on. It must appear that I have a stutter. 'Fffffrank Lloyd Wright - you know, the guy who wrote Cats.'
Actually, this year's calendar hanging in the kitchen is a Frank Lloyd Wright calendar and Zig was expressing interest in it the other day - yep, it's taken him until October to notice it. And husbandido's name is the same as a Lloyd Wright creation - he's not called Falling Water.
Here's a modern (modernist even) chune for you (you know who you are):
I also had a JoBros double tiered cake plate with sweet orange fleurs but it got smashed at a party; totally embarrassed itself (I don't know, something about never having felt loved as a child plate) - it was a pretty heady party - ALL the crockery were bit a tipsy.
I'm not sure if Johnson of Australia is connected to Johnson Brothers of England, but I'm still going with the JoBros moniker.
And now for a lullylullaby:
And now here's something to wake you up - awesome drumming, check it out:
Does anyone else snap up Johnson of Australia crockery?
I have a few pieces and unfortunately a few have smashed. I see them everywhere and think their time has come? I don't have a lot of room but I don't think I'll let that stop me. They're so lovely.
I particularly like the floral/botanica themed ones.
The last plate has developed a lot of crazing quite rapidly - not sure why.
Go JoBros!
And the new baby arrived last night! Welcome beautiful Ariella - Ziggy and Saskia now have a cousin!
